Port of Long Beach named best green seaport

The Port of Long Beach was named the world's Best Green Seaport at the 28th annual Asian Freight and Supply Chain Awards in Shanghai by Chinese trade publication Cargonews Asia, according to a port statement.

Based on an annual survey of thousands of freight transportation industry professionals, the award recognizes ports that put policies in place to lower fuel emissions and meet greener freight standards.

"This is an honor to be named the AFSCA's Best Green Seaport," said Doug Drummond, president of the Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners in a statement. "The Port of Long Beach has made great strides in reducing air pollution and improving water quality, and we are committed to doing even more."

Over the past ten years, the port said it started the Clean Trucks Program and funded technology to help lower shipping pollution. Last month, port and community leaders acknowledged more than 20 shippers for clean-air efforts at the port's Environmental Achievement Awards.

Port officials say both programs contributed to the ongoing decline of pollution at the port.
