Singapore maritime union builds $4M maritime simulation center

The Singapore Maritime Officers' Union first local maritime union to own a maritime simulation center featuring the latest high-tech facilities, aimed at developing the Singapore Maritime Core to support the local maritime industry, according to an SMOU statement.

SMOU said the $4 million simulation center includes the latest 240-degree full mission bridge simulator, engine room simulator, electronic chart display and information system and a liquid cargo-handling simulator.

The union said the Wavelink Maritime Simulation Centre, located at the Devan Nair Institute for Employment and Employability Institute, is one of the first maritime institutes in Singapore to house four simulation systems in one location.

In February the Singapore Workforce Development Agency and the Singapore Maritime Officers' Union committed $22 million over a 5-year period to support Singapore residents who wanted to pursue a maritime career via a 3-year program, the statement said. New cadets would benefit from learning in the newly built full mission bridge simulator.

SMOU noted that shipping companies that have an agreement with the union could also use the simulation center to upgrade the skills of current officers.
