Washington state bridge on Interstate 5 collapses, 2 vehicles hit Skagit River

Two vehicles were dumped into the Skagit River Thursday night as a 58-year-old Washington state bridge collapsed.

Dan Sligh and his wife were in a pick-up truck when they were plunged into the water, and another couple went down in another vehicle. All four were taken to the hospital with injuries, and are in stable condition.

"We don't think anyone else went into the water," said Marcus Deyerin of the Northwest Washington Incident Management Team.

Officials are investigating the bridge collapse 60 miles north of Seattle in Skagit, which fell after being hit by a truck. County State Patrol detectives spoke to a commercial truck driver whose rig crashed into the structure and who remained at the scene.

The oversized truck slammed into the side of the bridge shortly before the collapse, shaking the roadway and possibly weakening the 58-year-old structure, according to KIRO-TV reporter Henry Rosoff, who reported from Mount Vernon on "CBS This Morning" Friday.
