Port of Savannah to add 24 container cranes

The Port of Savannah will receive 24 cranes next year at a total price $86.5 million, according to the Georgia Ports Authority, with delivery expected in February 2016.

Port authority board members approved the purchase Monday. The order includes four new ship-to-shore cranes used to lift containers on and off cargo ships. The remaining 20 cranes will be used to transport cargo within the port's Garden City terminal.

Curtis Foltz, executive director of the GPA, said the new cranes would allow Savannah to accommodate bigger ships and provide faster service.

Georgia officials have said they want D.C. legislators to sanction a $652 million expansion of the Savannah harbor that would allow for larger cargo ships.
