Friday, May 16, 2014 Bangladeshi ship breakers tear vessels apart by handSpent oil tankers and cargo vessels are beached on the Bangladeshi coast of the Bay of Bengal. There, the mammoth vessels are disassembled by men — "ship-breakers" — who work for low wages at the highly dangerous sites. According to National Geographic's Peter Gwin, nearly everything on these old ships — from fuel, machinery and fittings to engines and lifeboats — is resold or recycled for a profit that can reach more than a million dollars per ship over the demolition period of three to four months.
