Workers break ground on $30M JaxPort rail yard

Workers broke ground Monday on a $30 million railroad yard as part of a major expansion project by the Jacksonville Port Authority.

The cargo transfer rail yard will be located next to the Dames Point Marine Terminal. The new facility will facilitate faster shipment, since currently containers have to be trucked dozens of miles to the west side of Jacksonville before to be loaded onto trains.

The project, expected to be operational by 2015, is funded by a $10 million federal grant and $20 million state grant.

Jacksonville contractor Dana B. Kenyon won a $23.5 million contract for the design and construction of the port rail yard. The remainder of the funds will help pay CSX to shift an existing railroad to service the yard.

JaxPort will own the facility, and a third-party yet to be chosen will run operations through a lease agreement with the port and a separate deal with CSX.
