Turkey’s PM wants to divert tankers with proposed $12 bil canal

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan wants to divert tanker traffic from the Bosporus Strait to a proposed $12 billion canal that if completed, could alter the size and scope of energy shipping between the Mediterranean and countries like Russia, Ukraine and Kazakhstan.

The “Istanbul Canal” would reportedly clear up congestion of smaller tanker traffic, and place more energy product onto the bigger Very Large Crude Carriers that are not currently able to transit the narrow Bosporus.

. “We’re talking about building not just a canal, but a city right next to Istanbul of three million people,” said Serdar Inan, chairman of Inanlar Insaat, a Turkish real estate developer.
