Tsunami warnings could come from GPS on commercial ships (incl. link to video)

Warnings of potential deadly tsunamis could possibly be generated from GPS units on commercial vessels.

Scientists at the University of Hawaii have tested a research vessel equipped with GPS that detected changes in sea surface heights as a result of that vessel’s data mirroring what was recorded by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center after the 8.8 earthquake in Chile in February 2010.

The University of Hawaii team would now like to see a network of commercial vessels equipped with geodetic GPS systems that could potentially help trigger a real-time tsunami warning.
