Tokyo university complete prototype sail system for cargo vessels
Engineers at the University of Tokyo say they have completed a prototype for a wind sail system for cargo ships that utilize lightweight aluminum fiber reinforced polymer poles that could reduce carbon dioxide emissions by up to 50 percent and fuel usage by 30 percent.
The engineers estimate shipping companies would see a return on investment via fuel savings within 5-10 years of deployment of the $2.5 million cost for the hollow composite tubes that measure 164 tall by 66 feet wide.
