Platform supply vessel to get $62M yacht makeover

Yacht firm Edmiston & Company is planning to transform a rugged cargo ship into a $62 million yacht.

The new yacht's base is a VARD 1 Series Platform Supply Vessel, ships that VARD affectionately refers to as "the trucks of the sea." Generally used to deliver supplies to remote off-shore platforms and oil rigs, PSVs are seriously seaworthy ships, designed to tackle anything thrown at them, up to and including Arctic and Antarctic waters. Not only that, but they can be self-sufficient for as long as a month at a time.

The VARD 1 -08 Kilkea will retain those features, including space for 36 guests and the capability of going on 30-day jaunts with no need to resupply. The ship will also be outfitted with a helicopter and, of course, a new coat of paint.
