Amazon to launch tablet to compete with iPad

Taiwan’s notebook maker Quanta Computer said it recently received OEM orders from the major web-based e-commerce portal Amazon for its upcoming touch-screen tablet PC – a purported competitor to Apple’s successful iPad.

According to a report in DigiTimes, Amazon expects monthly orders during this year’s peak shopping season to reach between 700,000-800,000 units per month, pumping $3.5 billion worth of revenue to Quanta, which said it should start shipping as soon as the second half of 2011.

Amazon already has its Kindle e-reader which is reportedly still doing well in sales, however, the company wants to compete in the PC tablet market where more software and content is available to users.
