ABB turbochargers improve container ship engine performance

Power and automation technology firm ABB has announced the introduction of turbochargers on container ships to improve engine performance.

Two supersized container ships — the 19,100-TEU CSCL Globe and the 19,224-TEU MSC Oscar — have already been equipped with engines incorporating ABB-designed turbochargers. These China Shipping Container Lines and the Mediterranean Shipping Company supersized container ships are the only vessels over 19,000 TEUs currently in operation, according to ABB. MSC is due to launch the MSC Oliver in April 2015 that has capacity identical to the Oscar, and is commissioning 18 more to follow.

Each ship is equipped with MAN diesel engines. The Globe features three ABB A185-L turbochargers, while MSC Oscar is equipped with ABB 180-L

turbochargers. ABB designed auxiliary engines on both vessels. The ships have advanced engines, coupled with ABB high efficiency turbochargers to improve engine efficiency, lower fuel consumption and cut emissions, the statement said.

"Container vessels have almost doubled in capacity over the last five years, with the cost of fuel ensuring that increased engine efficiency will remain a high priority for owners and operators," said Arie Smits, Senior General Manager, ABB Turbocharging in Switzerland. "Our A100-L series of turbochargers was developed based on extensive feedback from marine industry customers. Meeting the specific requirements of ships of this size, they feature technology widely proven on the smallest to largest two-stroke marine diesel engines including reduced fuel consumption and compliance with IMO Tier I, Tier II and Tier III limits and NOx emissions."
