ATA chief: Increased natural gas use in trucks will bring major changes

Most truck manufacturers offer natural gas models and trucks that burn natural gas as opposed to diesel experience less wear and tear, said Bill Graves, president and CEO of the American Trucking Associations at the recent Pegasus TransTech User Conference in Clearwater, Florida.

“[Natural gas] will change the landscape,” Graves said.

As a result, there will be serious competition between suppliers of diesel and of natural gas, he said. Pilot Flying J announced it would offer natural gas within its network of truck stops, Graves said.

Despite what Graves views as the unwillingness of the U.S. Congress to pass tax credits to encourage natural gas adoption by truck fleets, he said he remains optimistic about the future of natural gas in trucking.

“This is going to work,” he said.
