CMA CGM newest 16,000-TEU containership embarks on maiden voyage

The CMA CGM Alexander von Humboldt, the second of what is currently the world's largest containership series, began its maiden voyage Friday in Pusan, South Korea, the company announced.

Built by Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering in South Korea, the UK-flagged vessel is 396 meters long and 54 meters wide, with a draft of 16 meters and features "all the latest environmental technologies," according to CMA CGM.

The vessel is the second of a series of three 16,000-TEU vessels, which are all named for great explorers. The CMA CGM Jules Verne, which will sail under the French flag, will be delivered in May 2013.

The CMA CGM Alexander von Humboldt will serve the company's French Asian Line. The ship will be christened May 30 in Hamburg.
