Massachusetts Port Authority launches clean truck program

The Massachusetts Port Authority announced the purchase of its first clean diesel replacement truck this month, a result of the clean truck program it conceived with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency last fall. The jointly funded program gives truck owners who service Massport terminals a financial incentive to replace older trucks with newer vehicles that are 2007 emission compliant or better.

The program anticipates the replacement of 60 older trucks, with truck owners required to take on at least half of the replacement cost. Truck engines or the older vehicles must be scrapped. The Clean Truck Program replaces 15- to 26-year-old trucks with those that are 2007 emission compliant, funded by $1 million from Massport along with a $500,000 EPA Diesel Emissions Reduction Act grant. The $1.5 million will provide truck owners with 50 percent of their replacement costs, up to $25,000.
