Maersk opens the Climate Box for communities

Denmark's Maersk Line has opened a container for the public to view in Charleston, South Carolina in conjunction with the VELUX 5 Oceans Race Village.

The Climate Box is an interactive exhibit inside of a shipping container that the ocean carrier said: "gives the community insight about the effects of global shipping."

Maersk said the Climate Box is meant to educate communities "about greenhouse gas emissions generated by transporting cargo, eco-efficiency improvements in ship design and operational decisions made to use resources more efficiently."

The exhibit includes a "cash register" that allows visitors to scan the CO2 footprint of everyday goods, Maersk said.

The exhibit in Charleston runs from May 10 through May 15. Maersk Line is the 30,000-nautical-mile-race's official transportation partner.

The race began last October and Maersk said it has provided six-such Climate Boxes in the global port cities of La Rochelle, Cape Town, Wellington and Charleston for each stop of the race around the world. Charleston is the fourth stopover.
