Oregon port inks deal for wind energy

The Port of Coos Bay has signed a six-month negotiation agreement with an offshore wind energy company. If successful, the company may be the first to test ocean wind energy on the U.S. West Coast.

The company is competing for a Department of Energy contract to test offshore wind turbines. If successful, demonstration turbines and platforms could be launched on the west side of the Oregon Gateway Terminal by 2014.

The port has not released the name of the wind energy company, since it’s still in the DOE contract competition phase.
