EU study says technology in place to use biofuels in ship engines

Biofuels are not currently used much in the shipping sector. But a study sponsored by the European Maritime Safety Agency reports that the technology is readily available to replace fossil fuels with biofuels.

In addition to reducing pollutants and improving air quality, biofuels could be a cheaper option for the embattled shipping industry. Up to 50 percent of a ship’s operational costs is related to fuel.

The study concludes that policy and organizational concerns limit the adoption of marine biofuels, rather than technical inadequacies.
