Friday, March 28, 2014 MacGregor offers improved container lashingCargo systems of container ships are mostly specified by the shipyard, with the ship owner having little say in the specification, says Ari Viitanen, director of customer solutions for Dry Cargo at MacGregor, part of Cargotec. MacGregor targets container ships with capacity of over 8,000 TEUs or more, offering improvements to the lashing system and cargo hatch covers based on the cargo, and also examining the efficacy of software and operating processes. This new service has been developed with the help of project partners PBI Institute, Åbo Akademi, the Turku School of Economics, and Safety at Sea in Scotland. "An efficient cargo system can increase a ship's profit by several million dollars per year compared with a shipyard's standard offering. And now that we can (quantify the process), thanks to new calculation tools and simulation methods, it is increasingly apparent that they are substantial," said Viitanen.
