NYK partners with institute to reduce ship emissions

Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) and the Monohakobi Technology Institute, an NYK Group company, have made eco-friendly adjustments to a containership resulting in a 23 percent reduction in CO2 emissions over six months.

To reduce energy consumption, shipping lines often employ slow steaming. NYK Group has been conducting research to make existing ships more energy efficient at slower speeds, studying methods such as remodeling the ship’s bulbous bow and installing MT-FAST.

NYK examined actual voyage data gathered over six months, finding the changes made yielded a 23 percent reduction in CO2 emissions that was certified by the ship classification society ClassNK. It was also verified that the conversion did not affect the safe operation of the ship or engine operations.

This project is being supported by a grant provided through the Maritime Port Authority of Singapore’s Green Technology Programme and also by the ClassNK Joint R&D for Industry Program.
