Walmart develops big rig
Walmart, which has one of the world’s largest commercial truck fleets, has developed a new big truck that uses a radical design to increase airflow and cut fuel use.
The concept truck and trailer is called the WAVE, which stands for Walmart Advanced Vehicle Experience, and was designed by Walmart in partnership with Peterbilt, Great Dane Trailers, and Capstone Turbine.
The low-profile-shaped cab makes it 20 percent more aerodynamic than a standard rig, and it’s towing the world’s first 53-foot carbon fiber trailer.
Inside, the driver sits in the middle and is flanked by LCD displays. The truck also features a sleeper cabin in the back.
It uses a turbine-powered battery-electric hybrid drivetrain, and the combustion engine can run on diesel, natural gas and biodiesel.
But right now it’s just in the concept phase.
“It may never make it to the road, but it will allow us to test new technologies and new approaches,” says Walmart president and CEO Doug McMillon.
Wired magazine says the WAVE could pave the way forward for the future of long-haul trucking.
