New ecofriendly ship engine developed in Denmark (video)

A research facility in Denmark has developed a new class of cargo ship engine, powered by both diesel and liquefied natural gas.

The ecofriendly engine was designed to reduce emissions of pollutants like carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxides.

"Ship operators will have extra screens to monitor on the operation panel. The only extra function that they will have to take care of is to press gas when

desired," says Michael Johnsen Kryger, a mechanical engineer with MAN Diesel & Turbo.

The engine consists of an inner and outer pipe. Because the outer pipe is ventilated, gas can be monitored to locate any leakages in the system. Scientists said the biggest challenge was finding the components to build the engine that would be both safe and reliable.
