Obama plans manufacturing hubs to train high tech workers

During his the 2014 State of the Union, President Obama announced plans for six new manufacturing hubs, or innovation institutes, aimed to train Americans for high tech jobs.

The President said the aim was to "beat other countries in the race for the next wave of high-tech manufacturing jobs." Two of the institutes are already in progress: America Makes, the additive manufacturing hub in Youngstown, OH, and the recently announced wide bandgap semiconductor hub in Raleigh, NC.

Although there is cynicism as to whether the high tech boom will make up for the manufacturing jobs the U.S. has lost in recent years, manufacturing has added more than half a million jobs since 2010.

Obama wants the U.S. to capitalize on the new renaissance in manufacturing technology. New technology includes additive manufacturing, or 3D printing, and next-generation semiconductors that could enable a new wave of electronics. New advanced, lightweight materials and high-tech sensors will enable intelligent automation systems, including more sophisticated robots and drones.
