Retailers push for sales tax “E-Fairness”

A U.S. retail industry group is pushing for what it terms “E-Fairness” when it comes to the disparity between “Main Street retailers” and their online counterparts with regard to collecting sales tax.

“The role that Main Street retailers play in the economy is enormous, but the laws governing sales tax collection put them at a distinct disadvantage to online-only retailers, threatening their ability to grow and create jobs,” said Sandy Kennedy, president of the Retail Industry Leaders Association.

Kennedy’s letter referenced online retailers being exempt in many states from collecting sales tax owed on purchases made online.

“Quite simply, the government is giving Amazon.com a special deal that gives them an unfair advantage over local businesses. This simply isn’t fair,” Kennedy said in a letter to the chairmen and ranking members of the U.S. House Judiciary and Senate Finance Committee.
