Suez Canal leaks halt construction

One of the sections the channel being built parallel to the Suez Canal started leaking Monday.

According to Canal chairman Mohab Mameesh, part of the sedimentation basin collapsed and the resulting water flow caused two empty vehicles to drift. He said the leak was quickly stopped and that no injuries resulted.

Navigation through the original canal remains unimpeded.

Egypt is expanding the Suez waterway that connects the Mediterranean and the Red Sea. The project is slotted for completion by August 2015.
