Kalmar signs deal with Greek container terminal for 12 electric RTGs

Kalmar, an arm of Cargotec, has signed a deal to deliver 12 all-electric rubber tired gantry cranes in late 2013 to Piraeus Container Terminal in Greece.

The crane purchase is part of the port's ongoing expansion, which aims to hike container volumes there from 2.6 million TEUs to 3.1 million TEUs per year.

"Once we install the 12 RTGs from Kalmar, the stacking capacity of our terminal will increase by 30%," said the port's deputy director. "We believe that our terminal will achieve reduced operating costs with increasing throughputs."

Terminal operations company COSCO Pacific Limited owns Piraeus Container Terminal, operating in Greece since 2009.
