Port Metro Vancouver awards contract for two new patrol vessels

Port Metro Vancouver recently previewed two new harbor patrol vessels begin designed and constructed by Campbell River's Daigle Welding and Marine.

The company won an open-bidding process to design and build the patrol boats, which will provide continuous marine surveillance with early incident detection and activity tracking to help ensure the safe transport of cargo through the port. Daigle will use parts from a number of local suppliers to build the ships.

Jastram Engineering will provide the complete steering gear and control system, which uses the latest Digital Control Amplifier (DCA 100) and Digital Helm unit (DH 36) technology, providing precise power steering control that will automatically switch over to manual hydraulic control in the event of a failure.

Osborne Propellers will supply semi-custom designed propellers modified for heavier leading and trailing edges, which promote longer service life and less damage from impacts with floating debris typical in the waters around Vancouver.
