Container ship strikes and kills fin whale

A container ship, on its way to the Port of Los Angeles, struck and killed a male fin whale Tuesday, according to officials.

The whale was sprawled on the prow of the Ever Daity, an Evergreen container ship from Coco Solo, Panama, and appeared to have just died when it was discovered there on Tuesday evening.

NOAA will investigate where the whale was struck along the shipping route.

"It looked like there was an indentation down toward the tail," said NOAA spokesman Jim Milbury. "It looked like it was a recent death. There wasn't much of a smell. It's fairly apparent it was hit by the ship."
