Trade Compliance Requires a Focus on Information Gathering

By Tracy Lenok, Executive Director of The World Academy Div ARI

For a corporation to be successful in its trade compliance program, the individual in charge must be well informed about what’s going on at various regulatory agencies.

Departments of State, Treasury, Homeland Security, and Commerce are key government agencies that control what goes on in global supply chains and in the world of importing and exporting. A few other key government agencies to pay attention to include the International Trade Administration (ITA), Customs Border and Protection (CBP), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the Transportation Security Administration.

Finding Information on Agencies

Keeping tabs on so many agencies may seem like a daunting task, but many of these agencies and departments offer outreach programs. These can best be viewed by navigating some of their websites, which fortunately are somewhat user-friendly with “oodles” of data, resources, and useful information.

The trade compliance manager will find these websites very useful and functional for the numerous job responsibilities. Many of the websites allow for direct communication to the agency and offer an “on-line” interface.

We have found government personnel who manage the websites are responsive and helpful.

These websites below are but a few of the websites available for trade compliance professionals to access for critical and timely information on handling global trade supply chain management.

Most of these sites perform for free. Some have nominal or annual access fees).

Information gathering and utilization websites have become a necessary weapon in the arsenal of trade compliance management and have made the trade compliance manager a better resource for his or her organization.

By using the information from sites like these, managers are able to better avoid fines and penalties and run the import and export operation more successfully.
