Green Port Technology
As the planet confronts global warming, “green” is the color of thinking. Green connotes both eco-friendliness and the economics that challenge the transportation supply chain. With energy prices soaring and cargo traffic growing, it is incumbent upon the industry to invest in more and better equipment that satisfies the demands of the current and future market with environmental sensibility.
Universal regulations loom on the horizon, but many industry leaders are taking the initiative to implement green measures. There is fear that meeting the environmental goal to limit emissions will hamper port growth, but effective technology addresses both issues simultaneously.
While there is no consensus on fuel or equipment types to mitigate environmental impacts and keep costs reasonable, manufacturers of equipment, transport and fuel are responding to ever-emerging trends with creative, efficient and cost-effective solutions. The industry is changing rapidly, its future is green and it is now. Following are products that address, with high efficiency, environmental concerns and the world market.
Company: Cleaire Advanced Emission Controls
Product: Longview
Special features: CARB verified for all non-EGR on-road 1994-2006 4-stroke engines to reduce NOx by at least 25% and diesel particulate matter (DPM) by at least 85%.
How it works: Longview incorporates on-board NOx reduction with a catalyzed silicon carbide diesel particulate filter.
Clients: Ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles through Gateway Cities Program, Port of Oakland
Note: Requires minimum exhaust temperature for proper operation. Local Cleaire dealer can assess and determine product applicability.

Company: Clean Energy
Product: Natural Gas Alternative Truck Fuel (CNG and LNG)
Function: Natural gas is the cleanest and cheapest fuel available for transportation.
Special features: North America has natural gas sources that eliminate the need to import this fuel from overseas. Natural gas trucks, compared with 2008 diesel trucks, reduce NOx emissions by 33% to 83%, reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 23% to 30%, and essentially eliminate toxic diesel emissions. Natural gas fuel can save customers $1.00 and more per gallon of diesel.
How it works: Natural gas engines are manufactured by Westport Innovations and Cummins-Westport. These engines are the cleanest available technology. The engines are installed in truck chassis by leading companies such as Kenworth, Sterling, Peterbilt and Capacity. Clean Energy provides fueling stations for fueling the trucks. Clean Energy is building an LNG production plant to serve California, along with a network of truck fueling stations.
Clients: Southern Counties Express, TTSI, Cal Cartage, JBA, UPS, HEB
Note: Natural gas is the clean-cheap-domestic alternative fuel for port and regional trucking, yard tractors/hostlers, and harbor craft and for generating shore power for ship cold ironing.

Company: Hyster Company
Product: Yardmaster II Reach Stacker Series
Special features: Have the tightest turning radius in the container-handling industry with a high-strength boom to lift up to 9’6” containers five-high in the first row. Use an advanced combination of engine, transmission and hydraulic technologies, which improve cycle speeds, maximize container movement and minimize maintenance.
How it works: The Cummins 10.8L QSM 11 300 horsepower engine has an unladen lift speed of 94 ft./min. and load capacities up to 101,000 pounds. Hyster innovations include hydrostatic steering, return-to-center steering, electronic fuel injection, the Monotrol directional control pedal, Vista masts and the Ultima IITM multi-function control handle. The Hyster ComforCab II optimizes driver comfort and visibility for maximum productivity.
Clients: NY Container Terminal, New Jersey Rail, Waste Management, US Government, Oceanex, Alcoa, Rental Fleets
Note: Exceed 2007 federal EPA standards, meet 2010 CARB emissions standards and meet ISO 14000 environmental management standards.

Company: Kalmar
Product: E-One all-electric RTG (rubber-tired gantry crane)
Function: Handling equipment used to stack containers higher and wider than other systems without needing separate interchange areas.
Special features: This zero-emission RTG has maintenance-free propeller shafts and a trolley drive chain. With no greasing required, this RTG saves technician servicing time and the environment. Unlike conventional RTGs, it doesn’t idle and offers fuel savings of up to 30%. Maintenance interval is 1,000 hours for crane and engine. Has fewer components to maintain and easy access to parts.
How it works: With no hydraulics and a low-emission diesel engine and all-electric trolley, wheel turning and spreader, the Full Control all-electric load stability control system (anti-sway) enables a more productive crane operator. Gantry speed can be adjusted according to load under the spreader for improved operations and reduced fuel consumption.
Clients: Ports worldwide from South America to Asia
