While known as a container port, the Port of Tacoma also handles a wide variety of breakbulk, Ro-Ro and project cargoes. In 2008, the Port handled 118,523 tons. And as a Department of Defense National Strategic Port, Tacoma expects to handle an increasing volume of Ro-Ro cargo as military equipment returns from Iraq to nearby Ft. Lewis.
